Limiting Beliefs: Running in the Background

Published by drcathy at 11:06 am under Beliefs, Goal setting Edit This

You really want to succeed. You’ve followed the goal setting recommendations of being very clear and exact about your goal. You’ve stated your goal as a present reality. You have visualized every chance you can get. None of it seems to help. What are you doing wrong?

My best guess? You are not doing anything wrong. You have another belief, another goal, running in the background that your subconscious mind considers more important.

What could possibly be more important than what you want now? Believe it or not, it is what you wanted when you were a little tike … and I’m not talking about cookies before dinner.

Let’s say you lived in a home where you were never supposed to stand out. In fact, if you were noticed, there were negative consequences.  Perhaps your family was in the witness protection program. Standing out could mean death.  Maybe you were hit or made fun of if you stood out in your family. The safest person was the one who was unnoticed.

Safety is primary for your subconscious mind. If you achieve your success goals, you stand out; therefore, you are in danger. Your subconscious mind will do everything it can to keep you safe and out of danger. If that means sabotage to “save” you, that it will do.

This exercise takes more reflection and time than the one yesterday, but can be very enlightening.

You have a particular goal you want to manifest, but isn’t happening. Write that down on one side of the paper. Draw a line under it.

Now, on the other side of the paper, write down what is happening sabotaging the goal you want.   Draw a line under it.

Under each one, list everything that can or will occur if you achieve your goal. (They are both goals, you just don’t consciously want one of them.)

Now take one of the items you listed you want to achieve. (Whatever you choose, its opposite is probably in the other list.) Let’s say on your list is “I’ll have money.” Write that down. Now think of everything negative that can happen because you have money.

Your list could include, but is not limited to (sounds legal, doesn’t it), the following: pay more taxes, people will hound me for loans, people will hound me for donations, I’ll have to hire tax lawyers, spiritual people don’t have money …  Put as many things down as you can think of.

When finished go back to your list and put a star next to the ones that had an emotional charge. Those are the ones that are keeping you from accomplishing your goals. Those are the ones you want to change. Sometimes, simply being aware of what is running in the background changes things.

Other times, you may need some energy healing such as The BodyTalk System or PSYCH-K®.  I’ll address energy based healing in a future post.

I definitely identify with this. I really have to pay attention to how I’m sabotaging myself. Then I can reprogram through Psych-K or affirmations.

When I read this, it was reinforcing an impression I’d already had that this was happening with me. In my life, there was the goal; be successful with my career. And I do truly love my career. But I also have the goal; spend more time home with my family, time tending the land. Which I also love. Both are very important. But to accomplish both seemed at cross-purposes. One sabotages the other unless I can figure a routine/situation for both. So taking some time and using techniques to tangibly focus on working this out feels quite promising. And this applies to so many subjects- very helpful to be aware of this kind of ‘controversy’. :)

I have been using this process for a while now and decided to share it in a summer workshop course I presented this week in the Washington, DC area. The process is so simple, but really allows for long term personal work. The teachers in the course were most receptive and I feel sure that several will continue working with identifying their sabotages running in the background. For myself, I have received much more clarity working with this tool. Thanks Cathy!
