How to Tell Your Subconscious Mind What You Want

Published by drcathy at 9:19 am under Beliefs, Goal setting Edit This

The subconscious mind is amazing. It continually works in the background so you don’t have to consciously evaluate everything. You send your subconscious mind a message and it acts on it. It will keep acting on it until you tell it something different. Therein lies the problem, you have to be sure your subconscious mind knows what you want.

Before I talk about steps necessary to change the information your subconscious mind contains, you need to know it is very concrete. You may not be a “black and white” kind of person, but your subconscious mind is. It does not understand abstract concepts.

Let’s say that you just want to be happy. That is something everyone would like. But what does “happiness” look, sound and feel like to you? You may think that is a no brainer. It isn’t. Everyone enjoys doing different things. Some people can’t wait to get out into the woods and find a great camping site. Others enjoy nature, but the fun is spoiled by a tent. They want a king sized bed in an air-conditioned hotel.

For still others, “doing” brings no happiness. “Being” is what brings joy.

If you keep saying you want to be happy, and you do things that don’t bring happiness, you are confusing your subconscious mind. Help bring it some clarity.

Here is a simple exercise to get you started.

Make a list of things and people you enjoy doing or being around. Oh, come on. Jot down a few things either on that scrap paper there or your word processor. What is fun for you? What makes your heart sing? Your list can include things as simple as walking in the garden, planting flowers, playing golf or as involved as being an expert in ornithology.

Pick one of the items on your list and do a little imagery with it. If walking in nature gives you great pleasure, see yourself doing it. Actually envision a scene you’ve been to or would like to go. See the plants, trees, birds. Is that an eagle overhead? Notice the colors and hear the sounds. Can you hear the river running over the rocks? Smell the fragrance of the woods. Reach out, break off a piece of grass, and taste it. Get all your senses involved. Tell yourself, self, this is what I mean.

You can use this little exercise with a goal you want to accomplish. You’ve probably heard that you need to see yourself having achieved your goal. You do this to clue your subconscious mind into what you want. It will work in the background helping your accomplish what you want.

What? You’ve done that and you still sabotage yourself?

Ahh, there is something else running in the background of your subconscious mind that it considers more important.

Tune in tomorrow on a strategy to work with that issue.

Thank you for bringing language and steps to this process. I am enjoying sharing with my subconscious what makes me happy. Such a positive twist on the thoughts that used to run!
